In 2008 and 2009, the association of the State Higher Education Executive Officers (SHEEO) hosted four meetings with state, system, and institutional representatives to discuss state-level postsecondary data systems. The meeting participants covered a wide range of topics regarding state data systems, including:

        1. the goals, purposes, and uses of a state data system;
        2. the process of building state data systems;
        3. challenges inherent in state data systems;
        4. the characteristics of an “ideal” state data system; and
        5. the data elements that should be included in the postsecondary component of a state data system.

A subsequent report was written to capture and synthesize highlights and commonalities from all four advisory panel meetings. It includes recommendations for data elements and suggestions for characteristics that should be included in a functional state-level data system supporting postsecondary education.
